In 1947 Brian returned to England following the independence of India.  He made a career change into teaching at the following schools:

            1948/49 Birkenhead School

            1949/59 Repton School

1959/78 Headmaster at Brigg Grammar School and Sir John Nelthorpe

In 1981 Brian was ordained to the non-stipendiary ministry following training at Lincoln Theological College.  He then became Assistant Curate in the Asterby group of parishes.

Briggensians A.G.M.October 4th 2002.

Chairman's Report (October 2001-October 2002)

It was once again my pleasure to present my Chairman's report - this being the end of my term of office.  I was pleased to say that it has been a year of many activities - one may even say that it has been the year of the re-unions with no fewer than 5 re-unions taking place.  However before we look at the details, I must thank our President (Mr.R.O'Neill) for all his time and interest given to the Association.  I thank the whole committee for all the various tasks that they have undertaken to make sure that all the functions have run smoothly and especially our Secretary, Barbara Kernon, and Jonathan Gregory, our retiring Treasurer.  To go into all details would take too long but to thank all the newcomers for their help must not be passed by without a thank you to each and every one of them.  It is good to see Roger Holmes and Jon Taylor with us adding to the new recruits. I have to mention our vice Chairman Ken Proctor for all his close help and support over the year.

I thanked all the unsung hard working people last year many of  whom are not on this committee but I can only say they have again put many hours of committed work for the benefit of our members .

.After our A.G.M last year the Briggensians  Golf took place at Elsham with our hard working golf secretary, Derek Stones, winning the event on a wonderful afternoon.

As usual the Christmas Sporting bonanza was held on the school field being organised by Adrian Gibbons.  It was well attended by young and old Briggensians and carried on with indoor activities late into the afternoon with eating and drinking taking place while memories  and news were exchanged.

The Newsletter was out in good time for all our readers to enjoy and thanks to all those who helped in the publication and presentation which includes so many people in School including our Headteacher.  It was so popular that we had to have a second print - maybe due to all the reunions taking place.

In February the first of the re-unions took place when many of the 1988-1993 year travelled from many places near and far to meet in Brigg for the early evening and later going into Scunthorpe before getting home in time for an early breakfast the following morning.

The Annual Dinner was held in March and was again well attended with the golf course being in use for some of the guests in the morning. Our speaker was Mark Proctor who gave us an interesting talk, which included his own memories of life attending our school here in Brigg, as well as his experiences in his career as a vet.  For the first time Mrs Linda Hewlett-Parker gave the response for the School, which was eagerly awaited and well received by all present.  We all hope that after her first full year Linda has enjoyed her time in school, with us on this Committee and living in this part of North Lincolnshire. Thanks need to be paid to David Tear for being Master of Ceremonies and Nigel Fisher and last year's 6th Form members for all the help they displayed on the evening.  It is an evening when the committee can all join together and have a good time…and hopefully this can continue.  Our thanks go to Ernie and all his staff at Elsham Golf Club and I know that many of our members are already looking forward to next year's event.

In May Martin Lawley and friends organised a 60's and 70's reunion at Scawby Village Hall where many old faces, including staff, met up again and spent a very enjoyable evening.

On a quieter note Mr Roy O'Neill and many of his contempories met up in Lincoln to enjoy an evening together.

Back on the sporting front  the  Spring Golf meeting at Forest Pines was won by Jon Taylor being presented with his prize by our Captain Alan Ladlow.  The Summer sports evening again took place but again the dangerous rainy conditions prevented the ladies and girls getting together for the rounders while the men had a closer victory over School in the cricket than was the case in the previous year.

The second School v Briggensians Golf match took place before the end of the Summer Term and on another wonderful evening the Briggensians recorded the first win in this contest and our Captain Alan Ladlow was the first winning Captain to be presented with the wonderful Shield.  This shield was kindly donated by Mr Ted Cox for future encounters and will be housed in School for all to see.   Everyone enjoyed their games as well as the supper that followed provided by Ernie and his staff at the Golf Club.

The final reunion took place in School in July and was organised by Julie Woodliffe (nee Taylor) and Jane Gibbons (nee Yates) with help from Simon Church visiting from Australia. The evening was another great success with many familiar faces having to be guessed by some of their teachers after so many years.  The event was another enjoyable occasion and thanks were expressed to all those that had helped in the organisation as well as a kindly donation being handed over to the School from some of the profits.

The final sporting fixture before this A.G.M.was the Winter Sports Evening.  The only match was the School v Briggensians football but hopefully the netball and hockey will be back in contest next year .

I have tried to keep my report as short as possible but in so doing I hope that I have not missed thanks where thanks are due ... but finally I come back to the committee members and say a big 'thank you' to you all not just for this last year but for the last four years while I have Vice-Chairman and Chairman ... and I wish Ken all the best for the future while he is Chairman.

PRESIDENT'S REUNION

Our President Roy O'Neill organised a Re-union of some of his old school friends and contemporaries together with their wives, which was held at the White Hart Hotel at Lincoln on 24th May 2002.  Some of these friends he had not seen for many years, but some he sees regularly and who also attend the Annual Dinner.

The evening took the format of a private dinner party, a Toast to an absent friend through illness, J.C.H. Codd (38-45), and one to the memory of J.C. White O.B.E. (41-48), and C.P. Stevenson (40-45), the updating of news over the years and many happy journeys down memory lane.

The old Briggensians who attended with their wives were :

T.R.D. O'Neill (36-45)

C.G. Taylor O.B.E. (40-46)

R.W. Stringer (40-46)

D.T. Leeson (40-47)

J.C. Sennitt (41-46)

M. Silverwood (42-45)

Headteacher's Report

It is amazing to realise that it is time to write my second Headteacher's Report for The Briggensians' Newsletter.

During the past year I have become even more impressed with the positive work ethos fostered in the school and the pride the teachers and pupils take in their work.  This is reflected in the excellent results achieved in the public examinations.  The results achieved in summer 2003 were better than ever.  Once again the number of pupils achieving level 5 and above in the Key Stage 3 SATs was very high with 78% for English, 79% for Mathematics and 81% for Science.  These figures are well above the LEA targets.

The percentage of pupils in year 11 who gained 5 or more A*-C grades in the GCSE examinations was 57% with 98.5% achieving at least one pass grade.

Last year's A level results were exceptional as they increased from 86%, in 2001, to a pass rate of 94.3%.  There was a significant increase in the number of top grades awarded and fourteen subjects achieved a 100% pass rate.  This reflects the expertise of the teachers who ensure that students enrol for the most appropriate courses and the specialists teaching the students receive.  Perhaps this is what helped to encourage a record number of students to join the Sixth Form last September.

It is very difficult for a high achieving school to maintain high academic standards and to improve on them.  Sir John Nelthorpe has done so this year.  I would like to congratulate all staff and students who have made this possible.

Over the past year there have been significant improvements made to the school site in order to prepare for major construction work.  During the summer holidays the pavilion; refectory and the open-air swimming pool were demolished.  The area cleared on the school field will be used for an on-site dining room and to improve parking facilities.  The proposed of the dining room is sympathetic to the other buildings in the area and should be operational by December this year.  It could be used for future social events!

The Lower School building has benefited from new double glazed windows along the front elevation and the corridors have been decorated.  One of the science laboratories is currently being refurbished and an extra computer suite added.

The schools sporting tradition continues from year to year with several of our students participating at county and national level.  As well as the traditional activities of soccer, hockey, rugby, golf and gymnastics our students have widened their scope and have achieved success in judo, kick-boxing and wind surfing. Several of the students have been assisted by sponsorship from The Foundation Governors' scheme.  There have also been the regular competitions between school and Briggensians Teams, despite the efforts of the weather to disrupt the events.

As well as having academic and sporting students at Sir John Nelthorpe we have a wealth of musical talent.  The Sir John Nelthorpe School Choir visited Spain for a week during the October half - term holiday and performed in a variety of venues.

Members of the Brigg Sixth Form held the annual charity week in October and raised over £2,300, which was donated to a range of local and international charities.

The VCE Art students in the Sixth Form produced four stunning murals, which are now on show in the new Parishes shopping development in Scunthorpe town centre.

At the end of every year we have to say goodbye to staff who have been with us for some time.  Last summer Mr Jim Flewker retired, he had been Head of Modern Foreign Languages for twenty years.  He will be missed by many.  Mrs Julie Hebblewhite who was already employed at the school as a Head of Year has replaced him as Head of Department.

Leaving and arriving this year have been:

MFL James Flewker Julie Hebblewhite

Physics Joe Plachcinski Matthew Mosey

Several of the above mentioned teachers left Sir John Nelthorpe School to take up promoted posts elsewhere.  We wish them well for the future and would like to thank them for their contributions to the life of the school.

It is very encouraging to be able to write about the numerous activities that take place in Sir John Nelthorpe School.  We turn out students with a range of skills and it is easy to see why the school is held in such high regard in the area.  Once again we have had record numbers applying to start year 7 with us in September 2003.

News of Old Briggensians

It seems fitting that we start this section with a note from last year's speaker Mark Proctor. He wrote to say how delighted he was to meet some of the masters from his days at B.G.S.when he spoke at the dinner last March. Messrs Atkin, Longden, Mailing  and Moore looking so different 27 years after his leaving. He was also pleased to meet some old boys from the same era as well as many others. In his days at school it was all about football (never mind the lessons) but today it is all about golf. Hopefully Mark will be able to play in some of the Briggensians games in the near future. Mark lives at 24, Sunningdale Close, Winsford, Cheshire. CW7 2LD

Mark's e-mail address is:mproctor2@ukonline.co.uk

We had many letters of thanks from many of the Briggensians who attended the dinner and notes that went with the thanks and hopefully we shall have room to share their memories. George Gurnell (169, Whirlowdale Road, Millhouses, Sheffield. S7 2NG ) wrote to say that it was with great pleasure that he had been able to be present at the 25th Annual Dinner. He expressed his thanks to all the Committee for the organisation of the event and the welcome he had received. He had enjoyed meeting up with Ken Proctor and Judy and to find them both looking well. Since October 2001 George has been corresponding with a Frank Gant who now lives in Wakatane, North Island, New Zealand. George has not seen Frank since 1938. They were both in the same form through the school from 1932-1938 both appearing on the 1938 Remove Form photograph (School Certificate year). George supplied this photograph to be published in the Nostalgia Supplement in 1999. Frank has had an interesting career in the Merchant Navy and he enclosed copies of two letters for the Association to read.

As far as George is aware he and Frank are the only remaining survivors of that particular form. Sadly John Gray and Laurie Collins (both mentioned in the Spring 2000 Newsletter) died in the autumn of that year. George was pleased he had been able to make the effort to visit them both  in the summer prior to their deaths and spend an hour or two reminising about B.G.S. in the 1930's. George stayed with a family in Brigg one weekend last July and went along after his swimming to see Ken and Judy and mentioned he had some photographs of the Dinner from last year, hoped to be here again this year and talked about school in the 30's and his brother Charles Gurnell who was also an old boy of B.G.S.

Someone else who was visiting Brigg last July was John A Rhodes (13, Hill Rise, St.Ives, Cambridgeshire. PE27 6SP) . He collected last years Newsletter from the school on a day when the Head and most of the senior pupils were away. It was an interesting return…..the first since the Tercentenary. He sent us his stamped addressed envelope for the 2003 Newsletter along with 1.00 pound for his life membership (which he seems to remember paying in 1949!) and a memoir about the staff and their nicknames in the forties. The memoirs are far too long to include in this Newsletter but we have copies that will go on display at this years Annual Dinner for the many 40's pupils who will be attending again. Hopefully these notes will be able to be stored in the library. John has been attempting to put some early memories of life in Brigg on to paper for his grandchildren, but his time at B.G.S. from 1941-48 has still to be completed. John also sent an e-mail, having logged on to the internet and was pleased to note that his contemporary, Robin Sumpter, is a Governor of the School - Fortitudine  -  and all that!! (e-mail for John: jarivo@waitrose.com)

P.D.J.Campbell  (South Winds, High Street, East Markham, Newark, Notts.NG22 0RE) who always writes to us with news every year did not let us down in 2002. I had mentioned that P.D.J. had been contacted by Donald Sykes in the 2002 Newsletter. It was the last time as Peter was informed by a friend that Donald had died during a heart operation last December. Peter and the remaining ones of his generation remember Donald and his twin brother John, who was killed after the Normandy landing. Peter was also interested to hear that Dave Brittain had read his account of life in the Boarding House in the 30's and that others had found it amusing. The Very Rev Leaning's memories of life in the Boarding House from 1947-55 show that conditions were just as spartan as fifteen years before. Remember there had been a war on! Peter met Dean Leaning in East Markham some time ago when he was Archdeacon of Newark. Peter had been glad to hear of Laurie Collins who was in the Boarding House when he was there and remembers his prowess at sport. Finally Peter wishes to pay tribute to the "editor" for the dedication he has shown in collecting information of "old pupils" and editing the Newsletter. I hasten to add that there is a growing team of helpers who are all prepared to have an input in the Newsletter and without their help no production would be possible. On everyones behalf may I thank you for your tribute and thank you for your very welcome contribution every year.

Keith Lacy (26,Abbey Road, Ulceby, North Lincs.DN39 6TJ) was delighted to meet so many of his old school mates from the1944-49 period at  the 2002 Dinner. After a very varied career in accountancy, football and cricket, he is now fully retired. He has booked his seat at this years Dinner and is attempting to persuade his brother Roy Lacy (1941-45) to join the Association. E-mail:  Keith@Lacy 6630freeserve.co.uk

Also from the 40's period writing to us is Peter Culpan (6, Burn Hall Crescent, Burn, Selby. YO8 8LT) . He was at school from 1944-50 and was better known as Cully. Peter is now in contact with Dennis Woolass, but would like to contact Brian Marris (having noted he was at the Dinner in 2000). Peter accepted voluntary severance from National Power in 1990, retiring as Manager of the Central Fuel Analysis Laboratory. To contact Peter please  ring 01757 270693.

Derek Sumpter (6,Litchfield Way, Onslow Village, Guildford, Surrey. GU2 7QL) wrote to say he had enjoyed the Dinner and the golf in the morning with Dave Brittain, Peter Welton and myself. Derek had always wanted to play at Elsham ever since he realized it was Tony Jacklin's old club.In the evening much nostalgia flowed on the 1940's table and the appearance of Barrie Eccles who they had not seen for 50 years was a real bonus! On behalf of the 40's table Derek wished to say "thank you" to all the Committee for their hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Derek finally asked for a favour that many other Briggensians ask. If anyone comes across any copies of Dr.Henthorn's Supplement to his B.G.S. History he would be delighted to acquire one. Many other Briggensians would like to own a copy of the History of B.G.S. so keep your eyes open please. In recent years a copy was found in a second hand book shop in London.

Peter Wade ("Wollaton", 18, Mallard Walk, Mickleover, Derby. DE3 0TF) enjoyed the Dinner and he was also pleased to meet Barrie Eccles again after so many years. Peter's wife has now attended four Dinners over the years and wonders if it is a record for former B.G.S. pupils' wives!! During his travels Peter visited Geoffrey and Betty Romans who had recently moved to Salisbury. Geoffrey was Senior English Master at Brigg from 1946-53 and was Housemaster in the Boarding House for five years where he met his wife who was Matron during that time- more reminiscences!!

The previous written note mentioned bringing his wife to the Dinner and Howard Paynter believes it is part of a  wives education to attend the Dinner - so does Jerry Richards and Dave Brewer. More from Jerry later. Howard (7,Bartlemy Road, Newbury, Berks. RG14 6LD) is now "cherry picking" (translating books, inspecting, playing a variety of Church organs and tutoring his private pupils in French and Latin, not to mention Tim Henman's cousin and a little boy called Arthur Guinness!) and reports that he is busier now than when he worked full time. Howard is a life-long Iron supporter, writes articles for the programme and the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph. He can be contacted at: howardpaynter@hotmail.com   Howard includes among his e-mail contacts Calvo-Garcia and Guy Ipoua: the former is the current longest serving Iron player and the latter (who visited the School) was the first Iron player to score  hat-tricks in consecutive matches. Last of all where are some of Howard's contemporaries - Trees, Teasdale, Kirkham, Sprake, Harrison, Burgess, Pearson et al?

Now back to Jerry Richards ("Strathmore", 15, York Gardens, Finchfield, Wolverhampton. WV3 9BY) who wrote to say his contact Howard (Harry) Paynter had suggested to write to me to get tickets for himself and his wife which he did and secured some 1957-64 vintage attendance. During 2001 Jerry retired from his post as Assistant Director of Finance at Wolverhampton (now City) Council. Jerry thought that his present news would not be as interesting as a coincidence which occurred immediately following his time at B.G.S. He studied at the London School of Economics from 1964-67. Places in London University's Halls of Residence were extremely scarce. The Lodgings Bureau did eventually find Jerry accommodation in a fairly run-down hotel at Blackheath SE3. Shortly after moving in, the establishment was taken over by new owners who refurbished the lower floors but allowed students to stay on, using the top floor of the hotel. Jerry felt quite lucky-food was good and the charge reasonable and he remained at the Clarendon Hotel,SE3 throughout his three years.  He travelled between London and home by train and sent his books, clothes and belongings - in advance - by train. It was an exceptionally hazardous process to get a trunk via BR from Brigg to Blackheath and then delivered to lodgings - but that is another story. By 1967 his battered trunk had been repaired with lots of leather, glue and screws and it bore numerous stickers which witnessed its previous movements between Brigg and Blackheath.

Early in 1967, the hotel room next to Jerry was taken by a pleasant elderly gentleman, fairly short in stature, dapper in appearance, with quite a resonant but educated voice. At the beginning of the Easter term Jerry arrived, as usual, before the trunk but, approximately two days later on returning to the hotel after a day at College, he found the trunk sitting rather conspicuously in the Hotel's hall.

His elderly next door neighbour came up to him looking quite excited,  "Is this yours?  Has it come from Brigg? Whereabouts do you live? Which school did you go to?” His name was Mr.Gaze and ,on the basis of a rather hazy memory, I think his Christian name was Malcolm. They had several long chats. Mr Malcolm Gaze had been Senior English Master at B.G.S. and had fond memories of the School. He described several exploits and incidents and he used his former colleagues' forenames and nicknames-Chips, Bumper, Tiger, Tod, Jim, Harry, Rupert, Doggie, and the like.

Unfortunately, I left Blackheath after finals that year and lost contact with Mr. Gaze, but I'm pleased to report that he was cheerful and well liked by all the staff and guests at the hotel. Many thanks for your memories and hope you , Dave and Harry continue the education of your wives for many years to come.

R Thompson (Hilltop House, Chalfont Ave., Little Chalfont, Amersham, Bucks. HP6 6RF) wrote in to say many thanks to Martin Lawley and co.for organising the 1970-73 reunion in May 2002. He also appreciated the liquid refreshments supplied by Highwood Brewery. Although it is very late to do he sends his ‘Best Wishes' to Dave Brittain for a long, happy and well-earned retirement.

Geoff Parratt, (180, Kings Ave., Woodford Green, Essex. IG8 OJQ) wrote back to say that he spends most of the Summer months at their holiday bungalow in Norfolk. With it being a popular holiday area, if any old school colleagues are around he would be delighted to see them. The address is: 24, Hillside Bungalows, Paston Road, Mundesley, Norfolk. (tel.01263 722423).

Our Guest Speaker for the 2003 Dinner Rev.H.B.Williams (5, The Terrace, Stewton Lane, Louth. LN11 8RZ) informed us on the reply slip that  he and Margaret have moved into ‘sheltered' accommodation. Although neither of them are adequately qualified for such as yet,  when the opportunity came along it seemed sensible to make provision for the future. We all look forward to seeing them both at the Dinner in April.

Paul Layzell ("Brookwood", Shootersway Park, Berkhamsted, Herts. HP4 3NX) made contact with us and pointed out that he had been at B.G.S.from 1954-61. On leaving in 1961, Paul emigrated to the Home Counties and headed for a career as a schoolmaster. It took less than a year to discover the error of his ways and after a short spell as a newspaper reporter he became what is euphemistically known as a "soldier of fortune" until his early thirties. In due course he retreated into the oil industry where he was involved for nearly 20 years in the supply of jet aviation fuel to the American Air Force based in East Anglia. During that time he married and has two sons, one of whom is at University and the other still pondering his future. Nowadays Paul works part-time as Bursar of York House School (an independent school) but his principal activity is as M.D. of Century Arms Ltd., a trading company which he set up some years ago.

Andrew Hepworth (6, Uppleby Court, Barton Upon Humber, N. Lincs.DN18 6DR) sent his membership money and said that he enjoyed reading the pages on the internet and he would love to come back to School sometime as he has not seen it since leaving in 1985. He would like to see what they have done to the Boarding House. Andrew has just moved back to Barton with his family, wife Jenny and three children Amanda, Joanna and Matthew to join up with the rest of the family. His Father is Vicar of St. Mary's and retires in a few years time and Andrew's move means he  will be able to spend more time with him before  that day.

Someone who will be remembered and maybe just as keen to see the Boarding House is Nick Oxberry.  He made the back page headlines last August of the Lincoln Echo Sport when he was selected to be the new supporters' representative on the Sincil Bank board of directors. Nick was appointed assistant director by Imps chairman Rob Bradley and looked forward to playing a new role at a club he had supported since he was a small boy.

Mrs. Jean E. Robertson -nee Barley (7, Stoke Close, Seaford, East.Sussex. BN25 3RN) wrote to say that she had enjoyed reading the 2002 Newsletter and found some interesting news of girls she knew at B.G.H.S.during the years 1942-47.Jean and her friend Margery Baitson (now Atkinson ) both travelled to school from Broughton. They were unable to attend the Dinner last year due to golfing holidays abroad but hope to keep the end of March free in 2003. Hopefully you will be free in April …sorry about the change. She sends her "Best Wishes” to all their friends.

Mrs Gloria Twells --nee Empringham (9, Links Way, Luton, Beds. LU2 7AJ) was a pupil at B.G.H.S.from 1958-1964 and remembers attending the 50th Anniversary of the High School's opening in1969. Gloria married Ian in 1971 and moved from Hibaldstow to Luton. They have two sons aged 24 and 21 and Gloria works as an Office Administrator in their local Junior School.

Sally Dewberry—nee Smith (4 The Bottlings, Elwes Street, Brigg, N.Lincs. DN20 8UL) wishes everyone to know that she is still living and working in Brigg. She has found a few old acquaintances via the internet and has had great fun meeting up. Sally is still looking out for anyone at BGHS around 1965-68 who may want to get in touch. Her e-mail is:  sallydewberry@hotmail.com

We have a letter from Mr.Jean-Pierre Trimoulla. P.O.Box 8621.  98719 Taravao, Tahiti Island, French Polynesia. He is trying to locate a friend who he has not been in contact with since the late sixties. Her name was Judith Stringer and was living at 10, St. James Road, Scawby, Nr. Brigg. After taking her A levels Jean-Pierre believes she went to the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. If anyone can help please get in touch with details.

Mrs Helen Cresswell informed us that Robert Hudson celebrated  his 80th birthday in at the Kent County Cricket ground in Canterbury on December 15th. A Sunday lunch with music provided by a live band , was organised by his son, for family, friends and many ex-colleagues. Bob is one of only a few scientists to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

We were pleased to have been contacted by the Jarvis family (Gwen and Peter) who informed us of the death of John Derek Peck on January 2nd 2003. Peter attended the funeral in Derbyshire. Jack Moore very kindly wrote the notes for Derek in the Obituary Section.

CHOZ BACK FROM OZ

FORMER Brigg Town cricketer and Briggensian Simon "Chozzy" Church, who emigrated to Perth, West Australia in 1987, returned to Lincolnshire for a reunion at his old school, Sir John Nelthorpe, in summer 2002.

The club managed to fit him in with a game on Saturday afternoon - for old time's sake, and he brought his old team some good luck, as they won at South Kelsey 2nds in Division Three.

He amazed his former colleagues by wearing a jumper over his shirt on a day which was sweltering by British standards but nothing more than warmish as far as the weather goes Down Under.

That evening he attended a reunion for former pupils of Sir John Nelthorpe School but was now the only person from Down-Under to make the long trek to Brigg.

For Tina Roebuck had travelled all the way from Australia specially to meet up his her former chums.

Once of Silversides, Scawby Brook, she was a pupil from 1978 to 1983 and now lives in Perth.

She keeps in touch with some of her former schoolmates through the Friends Reunited website.

Among the other guests was Shaun Coulson, who left in 1982 and who is now working with IBM in Portsmouth. He is the son of former headteacher David Coulson.

Many of the guests, however, still live in the Brigg area.

Much of the hard work for the event was done by Julie Woodliffe (nee Taylor) and Jane Gibbons (nee Yates) who is married to well-known Sir John Nelthorpe teacher and sportsman, Adrian Gibbons.

The popularity of the event was such that it was possible to present a cheque for more than £200 to the school from the proceeds.

Guests enjoyed a disco, live entertainment, a fine buffet and a bar run by Carl Sherwood, of the King William IV at Scawby Brook.

LIKELY LADS RETURN

IT was back to school for a group of likely lads from the 1960s as they got together for their first reunion for more than 30 years in May 2002.

The former Brigg Grammar pupils met up in the town to revisit old haunts and renew old acquaintances.

There was no executive suite to welcome these high flyers; it was a case of a ‘pub crawl' around Brigg followed by a Chinese meal to round off a wild evening.

The event was organised by John Scott, the grammar school's star swimmer before he left in 1970, in conjunction with Ian Wild, who now travels the world as a project manager. The Internet website www. friendsreunited.co.uk gave the lads, now turning 50, a chance to catch up with each other via email.

It was a close-knit group which shared studies in the sixth form including English, French and history.

Among them was Andrew McCarthy, now Proctor and Gamble's European legal expert in Belgium, there with his childhood sweetheart, Kate Sykes, whom he met while she was a student at Brigg Girls' High School.

Adrian Gibbons, a former pupil at the Grammar School, and who now teaches at Sir John Nelthorpe School, joined in the merrymaking.

Retired science and physical education teacher Gerry Longden also joined the revellers.

Steve Baggott, the well-known Brigg-based solicitor, joined the throng which included Michel Archer and his wife Marilyn from Tyneside, Mark Wilson from Epsom, former teacher turned press photographer Tony Clixby and Rob Parkinson who played cricket at county level during his time at school.

Ian Wild said "It's about time we got in touch with our feminine sides, and we hope to arrange another event and invite girls from the High School next time round."

Sally Smith, Gaye Johnson and June Brummitt who were at the High School at the same time made up the numbers on this occasion but didn't recognise some of the old boys who had changed a lot in 30 years!

ROYAL CONNECTIONS

North Lincolnshire hosted part of an epic journey to mark the Commonwealth Games and the Queen's Golden Jubilee in July 2002, with Briggensian Phil Hillard, well to the fore..

The Queen's Baton Relay came to the area on its way to Manchester, where the Games were staged.

Carrying a message from Her Majesty the Queen as head of the Commonwealth, the baton symbolised the calling of the athletes to the Games.

The relay began its journey at Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, March 11, and visited more than 20 Commonwealth countries. It returned to the British Isles on June 6 and began a 50-day, 5,000-mile tour, taking in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey and Wales.

Brigg Grammar School old boy, Phil Hillard, shared the leg at Withern between Lincoln and Grimsby.

ROAR OF APPROVAL

ANOTHER Brigg solicitor and former BGS pupil became president of a local Lions Club for the second time last summer.

Mike Johnson (54) took over as head of Brigg and District Lions from fellow Briggensian Steven Baggott. He last had the job in 1985.

At the handing-over dinner at the Kar Chinese Restaurant, Mr Baggott, who was last president seven years ago, said it had been a good 12 months in which the club had touched the lives of a lot of people.

He referred to a number of successful events, but particularly praised the recent new venture, a netball competition held in conjunction with the local junior netball club. Four hundred youngsters had thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Mr Johnson said he wanted to have a major project for the club to tackle during his year and had asked his new chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee, Richard Mason, to see what could be done to help the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance organisation, which was in need of funds.

He was also looking at giving more support to a major area of population, Barnetby, and he hoped Mr Mason would be able to organise a pensioners' night for the village.

Mike Johnson, born in Scunthorpe, is a partner of Hetts Johnson and Whiting in Brigg.

1988-1993 REUNION ARRANGED BY NICOLA DUNDERDALE IN FEBRUARY 2002

"We met up for drinks round Brigg, back around the old stomping ground and ended up at Scunthorpe at the Blarney Stone and Indian Ocean.  A good night was had by all, some of us had seen each other since leaving school, others we had not seen since leaving, which was 9 years prior!  The reunion did sort of come about due to the friends reunited website. People in attendance were:

Me (Public Liaison Officer for G.L.A. although currently on maternity leave, living in London).

Melanie Atkinson (Radiographer, living and working in Hull)

Lindsay Flockhart (International Account Manager for BT, living in London)

Claire Williams (Accountant for Insurance firm, living and working in York)

Alice Schofield (Currently on a trip around the world)

Nickolah Richardson (Payroll Manager for Burger King, living in Bedford)

Amy Bateman (Mum and café owner, living in Chicester)

Adam Dunderdale (works for Corus, living in Scunthorpe)

Nicholas Beacock (Civil Servant for North Lincs Council, living in Hibaldstow

Graham Mackay (not sure where he works, think it is in IT or insurance, living in London)

Alex Mason (think he works for a scaffold firm, lives in Warrington)

Steve Jordan (currently travelling around Australia)

Unfortunately the following could not make it-

Ann-Marie Dunderdale, Joanne Holt, Becca Carroll, Helen Drysdale, Sharon Ladlow, Lynice Knowlson.

As you can see some people are still local and others travelled from further afield.  Some are married, some living with partners or engaged, some single, a few of us even have children of our own - all very grown up.  However, we all soon reduced back to like it was at school.  Half expected you (Mr.Hastings- Head of Year) to pop up around the corner and tell us off!!!

We are hoping to do it again soon, maybe later this year, when the travellers are back!

NEWS FROM BRIGGENSIANS VIA THE E-MAIL

Hi, I am living in Durban in South Africa and I left Brigg Grammar School in 1963.  I would love to know if there are any records left that show the names of the other pupils.  For example the Sixth formers and masters in 1963.  Are you able to direct me.

It is great to know that the old school is still going strong. I have some fantastic memories of my boarding school days and must return someday to see the extent the buildings have changed.

Regards

Having just entered the Computer Age "with faltering steps and slow”, I found myself browsing through the BGS/Sir John Nelthorpe web-site and was pleased to note several names I recognised in the joint site with contemporaries, which could fill several pages.

I was also interested to learn of a new Headteacher, a Head-Mistress no less, particularly as I understand she was a pupil at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Hexham.  I was Head of English there from 1959- 67 and I wonder if we overlapped.

I am now retired after more than forty years' teaching.  The last twenty were as Headmaster of St. Ivo School, St.Ives, which became the largest Comprehensive School in Cambridgeshire.  When I arrived at St. Ivo, it was both a pleasure and a shock to discover my old Head Cale Matthew, some five miles away, fruit farming.  We were quite often in touch and my elder children picked fruit there in the summer holidays to earn pocket money.  After Cale's death I was in regular touch with his wife, Ruth, who died in 2001.

My last visit to the school was in 1969, but I should be interested in returning one school-day or to a relevant reunion.

Fortitudine and all that!

Mike Cosser

Since I was last in touch, we have lived through some fulfilling times. We have continued to worship at our local Baptist Church, Quinton Park, and Jenny my wife has had a sabbatical year, but goes back into the Diaconate for her final year in March.  I have overcome my nerves, and have attempted some preaching, some of which I have been pleased with.

Our daughter Emily has graduated in Maths from Nottingham and we attended the ceremony, a great day out for all of us. She was going to jet off to Canada, but in the event has taken up a PhD in engineering at Nottingham.  Something to do with bridges and satellite technology, but she has lost us, comprehension wise, years ago.

Our son, Alex, is at Aston Uni, studying biology and psychology joint honours.  He is enjoying himself, and was recently proud to be his best friends best man.

We continue to enjoy life, and love our trips to the local cinemas, and the odd curry meal.

I am still plodding around running, but am frequently injured with my Achilles, and the sports masseuse at Godiva rubs her hands with glee whenever I come near her, with my latest disaster.

Jenny continues at Age Concern, Coventry on reception, and I plod on as a Probation Officer, but I do love the work in all seriousness.

I have recently begun a day release course in Health and Safety, and am daunted by the amount of work I am expected to perform before the course is over.  I adore the subject though, and it fulfils me in so many ways.

We are healthy and happy, and thank God daily for that.  I enjoy the website, and many thanks to all those who work hard to keep it current.

With kind regards, excellent memories, and thanks again, Mike.

Brigg Girls High 1970-1977

Recently had sight of the Newsletter for 2001 and having lost contact with the area following the death of my parents felt it would be good to try to get in touch with Briggensians/ennes of similar vintage.

I did a Land Economics degree at Sheffield Poly and worked for a while for DDM in Brigg. As a qualified Chartered Surveyor I managed property in Doncaster before marrying Graham in 1984, and moving south. During the latter half of the 80's I was at Thames Water helping to manage their property assets through the privatisation process. 1991 and 1993 saw the birth of our two daughters and since then I have worked part-time in property management admin, whilst juggling the demands of sick parents from a distance, school governing, village events and the usual lot of a working mother. I am now beginning to study prior to resuming my career.

I'm still in regular contact with Gwyneth Owen (who I believe sees Jenny Lewis) but regretfully could not attend when she spoke at the Annual Dinner in 2001. Also in "Christmas card" contact with Helen Firth and Christine Brocklesby (both married with families). Saw entries in the 2001 newsletter from Ian Cook and Dave Green and also in 2002 the article about Julie Dent. Would like to hear from or be put in touch with, Lorna Payne, Liz Goldring and Carol Marshall, Chris Bradley, Brian Carr (or his brother) or any other ‘boys' from the '77 Maths and Physics es of Mr Stinson, Mr Brittain et al - I can remember faces but only part names. Hope someone remembers me!

Briggensians Scawby Reunion

"Last year we, that is some of us, held a Reunion of varying denominations of OB male and female from the early seventies era ... that is the time we were at the two schools High and otherwise, rather than something we have to look forward to.  It was held at an opportune time, it turned out for many to flee to all points (being the spring Bank holiday) one of which was Scawby Village Hall - a touch of may the fourth be with you!!!!  We few turned out to number about 40, this number got more difficult to gauge due to the swift pouring of alcohol into pint glasses by the great barman John - we don't do halves - Wood (OB) and his dear wife Chris, of Melton High Wood and brewery fame.  A nice tasty buffet was consumed, music played in the air, some danced, some noticed that the ic moves hadn't improved, Mr. Clixby kindly roamed round taking photos mainly of ex members of the High School again, but most reminisced.

The legendary Steve "Buller" Brown made an appearance all the way from Arundel with his girlfriend and sister Sandra (OBHS) met up with Bri Pearson, Spenner, Don Griffin and many footballing luminaries of the past including Scrumper and Polly.

Messrs Good, Thompson, Golland, Spring, Plumtree, Day, Pollard, me, and Twig again represented the year of '72 as did the ladies Karen Clixby, Denise Lockwood, Anne Wray (all nees).

I would like to thank Anne Wray, Hilary Fowler, John Wood for helping me a great deal.  Apologies to many I haven't named and will make a list next time.  Oh did I forget to mention Marguerite Leaning for her help and her bus load of friends ... thank you.

Next year, early summer it is proposed that some of us take part in a quality control visit to various watering holes in Brigg and end up in a Chinese or an Indian purveyor of food type place.  Most of us will have come of age by then.  So answers on a postcard please ..   Oh and did I mention Ged has resurfaced?

JOHN DEREK PECK

(09/05/1927 - 02.01.2003)

I first met Derek Peck on Monday, 2nd July 1956 in the Staff Room of that wonderful institution Brigg Grammar School.  He was the Head of the Art Department, which was not surprising since he was the only member of the Art Department!  I was a "new boy" on the Staff, which in those days totalled eighteen or nineteen, and all males of course.  How lucky I was to start my career as a member of that wonderful group of dedicated teachers.  There was "Bumper”, "Toddy”, "Chips”, "Thummy”, etc., etc., all ably lead by the great "Stan” Matthews!  Oh, happy days!

Derek, I was informed on that auspicious Monday morning, was recovering from a very unpleasant car accident, and whilst some of the scars were still faintly visible, he was, and I quote "back to his exuberant self!"  One glance told me he was the Art teacher.  He had a wild, unfettered hair, a noisy outgoing nature, and a tremendous zest for life.  At that time he inhabited the room at the end of the top corridor, now the Geography room, I think.  Later, when the new Biology/Woodwork block was built, he migrated to the vacant building opposite the School in Grammar School Road.  The room always seemed to be full of industrious boys bearing away at some chosen art form.  The walls, shelves and even the floor seemed to be awash with artistic endeavour; all totally encouraged by this "dervish" of a man.

He haled from Liverpool, and one could still detect a slight "scouser” accent when he spoke, which he did almost non-stop!  He lead me to believe that as a child he had suffered some sort of debilitating illness, which for a while had confined him to a wheelchair.  Hence he was not given to the more usual sports of football, cricket, etc.  However, in her endeavours to restore him to health, his mother introduced him to the joys of swimming.  As a result he was like a fish in the water.  When the now defunct swimming pool was opened, it was Derek Peck who took charge of the after School Swimming Club.  There will be many who will remember with pride their successes at all levels in the Royal Lifesaving Association exams.

For some reason that I never quite understood, he took me under his wing.  Maybe he felt that I needed to have a "get-away-place” to escape the claustrophobia of the School Boarding House.  Whatever his reason, I was only too happy to accept the open-house hospitality of their home in Castlethorpe.  Of course being a man of talent, he was lured away to a post at Maghull near Liverpool, and inevitably our friendship was on a different level.  We corresponded for a while but eventually this degenerated into the exchange of Christmas cards.

As he had impressed me so he impressed others, and it came as no surprise to hear that in due time he had been appointed Art Adviser for the County of Derbyshire.  This post he occupied until his retirement.  Sadly his wife died at a relatively early age but undaunted, he carried on giving out his infectious enthusiasm.  I know this to be true, for just over a year ago, I was invited to his 75th birthday celebration at his house in Fritchley, near Belper. The house, an art gallery in itself, and the garden were packed with well wishers of all ages - a real tribute to an outstanding character.

That day he walked very slowly and very carefully with two walking sticks to assist, but that old infectious humour still shone through, and as I waved farewell, he was smiling and for me that is how I shall always remember him.  (J. E. Moore 1959-96)

DAVID STOCKS

Sadly we must report the death of former pupil David Stocks. He was 43. David, who lived in Caistor, worked for the internationally-famous duck processing company Cherry Valley Farms as  logistics manager. He was a keen cricket follower and an official of the West Wold Midweek League for many years. As a schoolboy he lived in Brigg.

ROBERT DAY

A prominent agricultural figure, ex-pupil Robert Day has died of leukaemia aged 59.

Robert, who lived in Grasby, died while receiving treatment at King's College Hospital, London.

As well as his agricultural activities, he  had been an exceptional runner, was a hole-in-one golfer, had a long history of public service and was even awarded an Italian knighthood for his charity work.

Born into a farming family at Tongs Farm, Wrawby, he attended Wrawby Primary and Brigg Grammar schools.

He farmed The Grange at Cadney for 22 years before moving to Grasby in the early 90s and developing his own business as an independent agricultural claims consultant.

A former chairman of the NFU North Lindsey branch, he was golf vice-captain for the county NFU and his earlier involvement with the Young Farmers' Club in Brigg led to him being a Lincolnshire Show steward and main ring commentator.

Mr Day's activities in the Round Table saw him and another man, Mike Keal, becoming national organisers for an appeal following the 1981 Italian earthquake disaster. They organised the transport of hundreds of caravans to Italy for use as accommodation and were awarded knighthoods in appreciation by the Italian Government.

He played tennis for the North Kelsey, Market Rasen and Caistor clubs. He also served on the committee at Elsham Golf Club, where he achieved his hole-in-one.

THE PAVILION AND REFECTORY

AUGUST 2002 saw the demolition of  two buildings which hold fond memories for thousands of pupils who attended Sir John Nelthorpe School and Brigg Grammar.

The old refectory and the sports pavilion came down to make way for a super new catering facility to serve both the upper school site, off Grammar School Road, and the lower school site, off Wrawby Road (now on course to open late this year).

The brick-built refectory, dating back to 1890 and later used as a room, had  not enjoyed gainful employment for some time.

But the wooden sports pavilion, which dated back to 1929 and was built by pupils of the school, was still being used until its demolition by Brigg Town Cricket Club, which hired the school ground for its Lincolnshire League home games.

John F C Lee contacted the Scunthorpe Telegraph after reading in Nigel Fisher's Heard on Brigg Streets column about the pavilion being demolished.

He said he thought readers would be interested in information in the Briggensian from 1929, stating Mrs Talbot Cliff officially opened it on sports day on June 5.

"Also in the magazine was the cost of the pavilion (320) with information about the pavilion fund.

"I was in the 1st XI cricket team, opening the batting and winning my colours in that season.”

The Briggensian notes the athletics sports were held a little earlier than usual and there had been record entries.

"A new feature of this year's sports was the introduction of a ‘standard performance' system. Each boy who reached a fixed standard in any event was able to gain a point for his House. This meant those who were not successful enough to compete in the finals, had a chance to earn some points.

"After the sports were over, the newly-erected pavilion was opened by Mrs Talbot Cliff (wife of one of the area's early steel pioneers). In declaring the pavilion open, Mrs Cliff expressed her delight in being asked to take part in the activities of the school, of whose progress she was so proud. She presented the Challenge Cups and vote of thanks was afterwards proposed by the head prefect.”

The cost of the pavilion did not include the pavilion clock, which was presented by the headmaster and Mrs Daughton.

"The Headmaster will be pleased to acknowledge any subscriptions towards meeting the amount (£99 8s 5d) still outstanding on the Pavilion Fund Account.”

The following were listed as cup winners: Victor Ludorum: J K Button (School House); Division B, C N Temperton, (School House); Division C, C W Michelson (Nelthorpe House); Division D, C T White (Sheffield House); Bletcher Cup, A E Bell (School House).

Runners up: Division A, A E Bell (School House), Division B, H H Eato (Nelthorpe House); Division C, J A Robinson (School House).

The 100 yards under 11 result was: 1 S Fisk 2 E W Hoyle 3 H P Bramhill and J Dore. (time 14.8 secs).

BRIGGENSIANS NETBALL

The team continues to play in the Scunthorpe and District Netball League. This year there are no Divisions, all teams play each other twice. Team members include Mandy Popple and Natalie Golland (ex SJNS), Charlotte Ashton (6th Form) and Elaine Joy (Staff) plus Helen Cresswell (Umpire).

BRIGGENSIANS SUMMER SPORTS

Our summer sports reunion has been pencilled in for Friday, June 13 (6pm).

Hopefully there will be no clash with school trips (eg to the Test match).

Once again there will be cricket for the men and rounders for the ladies.

The weather has not been too kind in recent years, so fingers-crossed this time round!

Nigel Fisher and John Hastings are the people to contact about the cricket, while Helen Cresswell will again be the point of contact for the rounders.

With the cricket pavilion now demolished we will be using the gym changing rooms, offering the added luxury of hot showers!

Afterwards we will be heading up Grammar School Road to the White Horse for a few beers and (hopefully) a bite to eat.

The July 2002 cricket match was played on the artificial wicket and ended in a convincing win for the Old Boys against The School.

There were good performances with the bat, particularly by Kevin Percival and Craig Holmes.

The Briggensians were particularly pleased to welcome Peter Briggs (1967-73) who is now back in touch with us, and who attended the 2002 dinner.

Peter still plays club cricket for Keelby in the Lincolnshire League.

Afterwards we  retired to the White Horse to discuss tactics for this June's return game.

BRIGGENSIANS GOLF

Forest Pines : 4th June 2002 : Spring Meeting

This meeting was held on a fine sunny day, and I am sure we owe this to the fact that Derek Stones was playing.  The last time he was missing, due to holidays we all got wet through. From this happy social gathering we gave our thanks to Gerry Longden and to Derek Stones for all their organisation of the event, and to Ted Cox for being the source of  'knowing how and where from' when it came to obtaining the Captains Tankard.

The Tankard was presented to John Taylor with a very worthy score of 38 pts.

BRIGGENSIANS V SCHOOL : 16TH JULY 2002 : ELSHAM

This was the second playing of this fixture, and again it was a pleasant summer's evening with all those attending being in buoyant mood before they had even set off.

Ted Cox donated a new trophy for this event.  It shows the past and present school badges and looks very smart.  Thank you very much Ted, it is greatly appreciated.

The match was won by the Briggensians team and they were presented with the trophy by Ted.  The best team result came from Matthew Wall with his 3 &2 win whilst playing as a singleton.

Ernie Ferrier did Elsham GC proud with the supper he provided and with the serving of the same.

Thank you to all the Briggensians for turning out to play and for generating a very friendly atmosphere.

The participating players were as listed below, with apologies from - B. Wesley,

C. Mailing, J. Montieth, N. Golland, and G. Longden.

Elsham : 20th October 2002 : Autumn Meeting

Derek was with us again and we had yet another good day for twenty-three golfers to match their skills.  It was obviously well planned as we all finished ten minutes before the heavens opened.  Thank you Derek.  It was pleasing to see a brisk start from the tee so ensuring we were not holding the club members up.  The results were very close this year:  D. Howson, 38 pts (back nine 21 pts) and J. Montheith 38 pts (back nine 19 pts).

Dave was presented with the Briggensians Trophy and Blazer. The A.G.M. followed with Derek taking us through the minutes, events and happenings. When the time came for us to select the Captain for 2003, Dave Brittain was proposed and seconded and voted to be the man for the job.  He was informed of the pleasurable duty when he came back from Australia (which served him right for going away and missing the A.G.M.).

Our grateful thanks must go yet again to Derek for all his efforts in organising the events.
